Beginning Drawing is a student-driven, project-based course designed for students with little or no prior drawing experience. Through guided planning with their instructor, students select and complete original projects that demonstrate proficiency in designated course competencies. Emphasis is placed on developing a working vocabulary of visual art terms and applying the elements and principles of art to drawing practices. Students explore a range of drawing styles—from abstract to representational—and are introduced to the basic principles of perspective. A primary focus is on grayscale drawing techniques, though students may choose to incorporate color in their work. Because this course is highly customized to individual experience and goals, students should expect regular communication with their instructor via meetings or email. A modest list of art materials may be required. This course serves as a foundation for continued study in Intermediate and Advanced Drawing, as well as other fine arts courses.
