Advanced Painting is a student-driven, project-based course designed for students with prior Intermediate Painting experience. Students should have a strong understanding of the elements and principles of art, particularly as they relate to creating depth and perspective. Advanced techniques in acrylic, watercolor, oil, or mixed media are practiced and expanded based on each student’s artistic goals.
Students survey historical and contemporary paintings from around the world to gain a broader appreciation of diverse approaches to painting. They apply the elements and principles of art alongside critical analysis to make intentional decisions in their creative work. Emphasis is placed on refining both technical and expressive paint-handling skills across a range of styles—from abstract and semi-abstract to representational.
In addition to skill-focused assignments, students will produce a cohesive portfolio of work demonstrating advanced skills, conceptual development, and artistic intent. This portfolio may support applications to college art and design programs. A list of recommended materials and sources can be provided by the instructor prior to registration, based on the student’s chosen media and focus.
