Beginning Painting is a student-driven, project-based course that introduces students to the principles and practices of painting, including design, color mixing, and basic application techniques. Foundational skills using acrylic media are introduced and practiced throughout the course. Through guided planning with their instructor, students select and complete original projects that demonstrate proficiency in designated course competencies.

Students also explore paintings from both historical and contemporary artists around the world, gaining an appreciation for the diverse ways painting is approached and applied. Students should expect to engage in approximately 90 hours of work, culminating in a final synthesis portfolio that showcases their growth, technical skills, and creative understanding.

Acrylic media and supplies are required. A list of recommended brushes and materials can be provided prior to enrollment. This course serves as a foundation for continued study in Intermediate and Advanced Painting.
