Intermediate Painting is a student-driven, project-based course for students with prior experience in beginning-level painting. Students build upon their foundational knowledge of the elements and principles of art, with continued emphasis on creating depth and perspective in their work. Core acrylic techniques are further developed, and students are encouraged to explore additional media such as oil, watercolor, gouache, pastels, or mixed media, depending on their individual interests and project goals. A working vocabulary of visual art terminology is expanded as students apply design concepts to increasingly complex painting challenges. Technical and expressive paint-handling skills are refined, and the study of color mixing and use remains a central focus. Students explore a range of painting styles, from abstract to representational, while developing personal voice and stylistic versatility.
In addition to specific, skill-focused assignments, students will complete a portfolio that demonstrates the range of techniques and concepts explored during the course. A list of recommended materials and sources can be provided by the instructor prior to registration. This course supports continued study in Advanced Painting and contributes to pathways in both commercial and fine arts.
